Working with local communities to manage our natural resources sustainably since 1998

The Goolwa to Wellington Local Action Planning (GWLAP) Board became an incorporated body in 1998 with a Board composed of 14 community members and a Project Officer. A Local Action Plan was drawn up in 1999. Currently, three full time and two part time staff are employed by the organisation.

The GWLAP area extends as far north as Harrogate, across to Callington-Kanmantoo and Wellington in the East, south to Lakes Alexandrina and Albert including the islands of Hindmarsh and Mundoo and the coastal township of Goolwa. The west boundary follows the top of the Mount Lofty Ranges as far west as Mount Compass.

Local Action Plan

The Local Action Plan was developed in 1998 and first published in 1999.

The LAP Strategic Plan was updated in September 2009.

Vision Statement

To help create an environment where human activity and natural ecosystems can sustainably co-exist. Mission Statement Working with the local community to protect and restore biodiversity and sustainably manage our natural resources.

Funding

The LAP receives funding annually through the South Australian Murray Darling Basin Natural Resource Management (SA MDB NRM) Board. These funds are provided to the SAMDB NRM Board through the Federal Governments Caring for our Country Program. Funds are also recieved dirtectly from the Federal Government as part of the Caring for our Country Program. The Goolwa to Wellington LAP recieves funding through the Lower Lakes Bioremediation and Revegetation Project funded by the Australian Government and managed by the South Australian Department for Environment and Heritage to undertake specific projects on and around lakes Alexandrina and Albert.

LAP activities

Murray Rescue Scouts, GWLAP and Greenfleet reveg 50ha around Dog LakeThe main activity of the LAP is the provision of on ground works to landholders through an incentive program. Works include:

  • Protection and restoration of remnant vegetation through fencing off and weed control
  • Revegetation using local (provenance) native species
  • Restoration and revegetation of local native grasslands and grassy woodland ecosystems.
  • Restoration of river systems through fencing off and revegetation
  • Restoration and management of wetlands
  • Restoration and management of Lake and Estuarine ecosystems
  • Conducting a range of practical experimental trials
  • Provision of education and training in NRM related issues and topics
  • Convening a wide ranges of workshops and field days for community participation and to increase knowledge and awareness of NRM related issues and topics.
  • Assisting schools, councils and landcare groups in a wide range of areas including education and awareness raising, consultation, accessing fundng, provision of technical advice,  project planning, management and implementation, and advocacy for community participation in the NRM sector
  • Bringing together multiple investors and collaborators to deliver large scale on ground works projects
  • Sponsoring research programs and other NRM related activities
  • Monitoring and evaluation  of projects and project activities
